The Long Engagement

It has been a long engagement—

My beloved stirs and readies

Herself to be mine, to share my throne.

I paid the bride-price full, and cried

To heaven and earth, ‘Tis done, ’tis over!

Not to this day can what I saw,

And felt, and passed through be revealed,

But love almighty found the way

To right the ruin, redeem the lost—

And set my wedding plans afoot.

Sorrow aplenty I’ve already known,

Hatred I’ve faced and defied;

War I have waged to despoil the king

Over all the children of pride.

But long it has been, and a little longer yet must be.

Who will yearn for that day with me?

Whose hearts will burn to see satisfied

The broken heart that from Calvary cried?

Who will he be? Who is she,

That will ready the wedding for me?

Whose hearts will burn, looking ahead,

To share that great wedding with me?
